Best travel time for a diving vacation to the Solomon Islands

The best time to dive the Solomon Islands is generally during the dry season, which runs from April to October. During these months, conditions are generally the most stable, with clearer water and less chance of rain. Water temperatures remain pleasantly warm year-round, usually between 26°C and 29°C (79°F – 84°F). During the dry season, the seas tend to be calmer, which is ideal for diving and underwater visibility.

Wetsuit advice for the Solomon Islands

Year-round diving here is fine in a 3mm, if you get cold easily you can consider a 5mm for the summer months.

Please Note: The route description below is a sample itinerary. The daily program may vary due to factors such as weather conditions.

01

Day 1 | Arrival at the Solomon Islands

After a flight from Brisbane (Australia) or Nadi (Fiji), you will arrive in Honiara, the capital of the Solomon Islands. We will meet at the Coral Sea Resort for introductions. Day 2 | Russel Islands

Arriving in the Russell Islands, we start our first check-out dive at an impressive underwater WWII base, White Beach. Here, we discover an abundance of marine life such as archerfish, ornate ghost pipefish, and sometimes the hard-to-spot pink-eye gobies. Other encounters, such as colorful nudibranchs, squid, and octopus, may also make an appearance.

After White Beach, we sail on to Rainbow Reef – a colorful and vibrant marine mount with healthy reefs where schools of milkfish, barracudas, and rainbow runners congregate.

On the last dive of the day, we will do a twilight dive on Karamulon Reef, which offers one of the most enchanting scenes, especially when mating behavior occurs.

03

Day 3 | Best of Russel Islands

We will start this morning with two of the most stunning dive sites. Mirror Pond is renowned for its crystal-clear waters and passageways, which are occasionally inhabited by saltwater crocodiles. Next, we will explore Leru Cut, an iconic dive site in the Solomon Islands. After these unforgettable dives, we will continue to Custom Cave for an in-depth exploration. In the evening, a special dive at NE Mane awaits us.  This promises to be another day of breathtaking discoveries in this beautiful archipelago.

Flame Angelfish in Solomon Islands

In favorable weather, we sail to the remote Mary Island, known for its large schools of jacks and barracudas, as well as sightings of manta rays and hammerhead sharks. The dive sites at Mary’s Bommies are rich in marine life, where we may spot the elusive Flame Angelfish.

Dive 1: Jack Point – Impressive schools of jacks.

Dive 2: Barracuda Point – Large groups of barracudas.

Dives 3 & 4: Mary’s Bommies – Rich fish life and colorful coral formations, with a chance to see the Flame Angelfish.

05

Day 5 | Morovo Lagoon

Today we explore Morovo Lagoon, the largest saltwater lagoon in the world. We start by diving near an underwater volcano, where we can hear the rumblings of the volcano, despite it being 26 miles away.

Dive 1: Kitcha – Rich biodiversity.

Dive 2: Kavachi Sea Fans – Beautiful sea fans.

Dive 3: Male Male Magic – A magical underwater landscape.

After diving, we visit Peava Village, where we can explore a small school and a market featuring wooden sculptures. Don’t forget to bring cash and school supplies to support the school. We’d be happy to share more about our "Pack for a Purpose" initiative.

Dive 4: Where we anchor – Possible twilight dive.

Day 6 | Mbulo Island

Liveaboard in Solomon Islands

Today, we move the boat to the beautiful heart-shaped island of Mbulo Island (Mbulo means "heart"). This island offers three distinct dive sites with unique topography and one of the most stunning underwater cathedrals, where light filters through from different angles, creating a magical cathedral effect. Here, we can also admire beautiful giant clams, healthy coral gardens, and the paddlefin cardinalfish (Carmen’s favorite). These dive sites continue to captivate, time after time.

Dive 1: Toana – Diverse topography.

Dive 2: Cathedral – Enchanting light effects.

Dive 3: Coral Gardens – Spectacular coral gardens.

Dive 4: Coral Garden ND – Night dive.

07

Day 7 | Russel Islands

We sail overnight to the Russell Islands and begin the day at a dive site known for its strong currents, which attract more fish, and may also bring sightings of sharks and eagle rays.

Dive 1: Karamulon Point – An exhilarating dive with strong current.

After the first dive, we will visit the islanders of Karamulon, who will perform a beautiful traditional dance for us, showcasing their artistic dancing and singing skills.

Dive 2: Bat Cave – Explore a mysterious underwater cave.

Dive 3: Wreck of the Anne – Dive on a fascinating shipwreck.

The night dive at White Beach offers a special treat: the rare Flashlight fish. This fish is visible only when you turn off your flashlight to see its bioluminescent organ glowing beneath its eye. We hope to encounter them during our dive.

Dive 4: White Beach – A magical night dive with a chance to see the Flashlight fish.

Day 8 | Florida Islands

On our return trip, we stop at the Florida Islands. We start the day with a dive at Baby Cakes and spend the afternoon at Maravaghi Bay.

In Maravaghi Bay, we can choose between a relaxing dive under the boat, with a chance to see saddleback anemonefish and true clownfish, or an exciting drift dive on Devil’s Highway, depending on the moon phase and currents, with a chance to encounter manta rays.

The last dive of the day is at Tanavula Point, where we can spot a wide variety of nudibranchs. Keep an eye out for mantas as well.

09

Day 9 | Wreck diving in the Florida Islands

Dive 1: Twin Tunnels – We begin with a volcanic reef dive, where two identical lava tubes were formed. These offer beautiful underwater scenery and a wide variety of fish species, including almost all species of anemonefish. We also keep an eye out for the rare black-striped angelfish and larger fish such as marlins or sharks.

Dive 2: Catalina Plane Wreck – We dive into World War II history.

Dive 3: Mavis Plane Wreck / Reef – Our third dive is to the Mavis Plane Wreck or a nearby reef, depending on preference and conditions.

Dive 4: Ghavutu Wharf – We end the day at Ghavutu Wharf, a site rich in history and marine life.

Day 10 | WW2 Wrecks in Honiara

Fish Surveying with Carmen Toanchina in the Solomon Islands

The last day of diving is always bittersweet, but we conclude our trip by exploring two incredible shipwrecks near Honiara. After years underwater, these wrecks have become vibrant hotspots teeming with marine life. The variety of marine animals is astonishing, from stunning nudibranchs to colorful fish that have made these wrecks their home.

Carmen has always greatly enjoyed diving on these two magnificent wrecks and counting all the fish species she could find. Our goal is to achieve a “century dive,” aiming to record over 100 species in a single dive.

Dive 1: Boneghi 1 – Explore the first beautiful wreck.

Dive 2: Boneghi 2 – Dive the second impressive wreck, concluding our unforgettable trip.

11

Day 11 | End of the first GOSH - ladies only - liveaboard trip

Unfortunately, this fantastic trip to the Solomon Islands comes to an end today. After breakfast, you will disembark from the ship and board your flight in Honiara.

Where you’re flying next is up to you. Rianne is considering a short stopover in Brisbane for 1 or 2 days, followed by a week in Bali, and you are welcome to join! Fiji is also a great option for an extension, as there is a direct flight from Honiara to Nadi. It’s ideal if you want to dive with sharks at Beqa Lagoon, for example.

Of course, you can also head home. After 34 dives in the Solomon Islands, you’ll be tired but fulfilled.
